Mechanics   This 1-handed multi-function device allows for the operator to detect the presence of hazards such as radioactivity, elevated ambient chaos particulate, or detectable airborne hazards like the presence of toxic gases. There are three gauges which can be rotated between as a Free Action. Choose between the following detection modes: Airborne Toxins, Radiation, or Volatility.   When the device is in range of a potential hazard, it has four hazard levels on its gauges. The frequency of clicks the device emits may also indicate hazard levels. No clicks means no hazard in range. Near constant clicks means that the hazard is in the operator's immediate vicinity.
  • 0: No hazards detected
  • 1: Potential hazard detected
  • 2: Hazard in close proximity
  • 3: Danger, leave area immediately
  •   Activation   To activate the Handheld Curie device for one hour, insert a battery and spend an Action. The Handheld Curie device can be inspected once per turn as a Free Action while it is active. The device can also have audible clicks enabled during activation, which will be played from the device, heard out to 30 feet from the operator, so the operator does not need to spend a Free Action to inspect the device and instead hears it. Enabling or disabling the audible clicks is a Free Action.   Range   The Handheld Curie Device will detect a hazard if it is within a 90-degree, 45 ft. cone in front of the operator. It will not tell the operator any exact distances to a hazard but will instead provide hazard levels.   Consumption   Once per activation, this device will consume a battery's charge.   Consumable Types
  • One Standard Battery
  • One Rechargeable Battery
  • Duration   The Handheld Curie device will remain operational for one hour once activated.

Few devices are as useful for a Magpie as a Curie Device. This particular technology has been around since The Great War, some 120 odd years ago. It is relatively simple. It has three small chambers that contain gases. These gases react to specific hazards when a low current is run through them, but the device can only handle one type of detection at a time due to limitations on power draw. It can emit audible clicks if desired. The chamber that detects radioactivity is filled with inert argon gas. The chamber that detects toxic gases uses a radon tube. The chamber that detects ambient volatility has a sterilized organic compound which needs to occasionally be replaced. These chambers are attached to the front of the device and have a gear to rotate between the three, similarly to a microscope's lenses.
